However, choosing to go through with hair replacement can be a tough choice as there are many speculations about wearing wigs, sometimes for religious reasons, as many religions have quoted beliefs on whether wearing a wig or hair piece is acceptable.

Wearing wigs in Islam.

In Islam, it is believed that a woman’s head and hear is to be covered with a scarf, or hijab. The purpose of a hijab is not only to cover a women’s hair, the main purpose in Islam is to serve as a concealment of a women’s adornment.

Any women that are able to marry will have certain rules and following they must abide by, in Islam clothing that is deemed inappropriate such as leggings, bodycon dresses, mini skirts, anything that shows the shape of your body, is not allowed. In addition to clothing, the Shariah (Islamic canonical law based on the teachings of the Koran, and traditions of the prophet), The Shariah prohibits women from wearing wigs, hair extensions or any kind of hair related replacement. Since these are classified as being false, as passing these off as your own hair.

Trimming your hair short additionally accompanies its judgment since the purposes behind trimming the hair short relies upon the aim and the work. In Islam, ladies’ hair is an embellishment and a characteristic trimming and which separate ladies from men. Subsequently, a lady who shortens her hair with no reason will look like a man, which is forbidden and disliked for women to resemble men, there should be a clear difference between them, whether it be their personal appearance or hair.

It is also specified that Allah created every individual in a uniquely different way, therefore making changes to his/her body, unless for an obligatory or crucial reason, It is prohibited. Furthermore, it is forbidden for women to wear a wig that is made from human sourced hair. However, it is sometimes acceptable for a wig that is made from animal hair or artificial materials such as synthetic to be worn.

When is it accepted?

Using hair from another human is prohibited in the words of Allah, regardless if the hair is integrated into your own hair or worn as a removable wig. Even if you are suffering from hair loss. However, not- human sourced hair such as synthetic fibres or other animal hair can be obtained. Using hair from a pig is strictly not permitted since this animal is seen as dirty, filthy and impure.

Although synthetic and other materials are allowed, there are a few circumstances that should be considered. This includes the following;

• A person who has been born with a defect causing them to lose all or part of their hair.

• If an individual develops a disease such as cancer, where treatment such as chemotherapy results in hair loss.

• Major trauma, such as burning which has resulted in a person, losing their hair.

• In some cases, countries like Tunisia or Turkey have certain areas that prohibit women from wearing hijabs, meaning they are sometimes forced to wear wigs.

However, there are various Islamic scholars (also referred to as muslin scholars, these terms refer to religious authorities whose publications or statements are accepted as pronouncements, respective of their communities and adherents.) that have different views, in regard to wearing a wig. Here are some of their views; –

• According to the Shafi’s,(one of the four schools of Islam) it is allowed for women to wear such wigs but for their spouse only.

• Hanabalis’s, another school of Islam, consider wigs as forbidden, as they believe hair used from an impure source is not accepted.

• Wigs are also forbidden by the Maliki’s, the third school of Islam

• However, the Hanafi scholars, permit that wigs made from animal hair are accepted.
