Ever wondered how celebs change their hairstyles from day to day? The secret… WIGS!

Have you ever wondered how celebrities like Beyonce, Rihanna, Nicki Minaj and Naomi Campbell seem to change their hairstyles from one day to the next, going from long to short and back in one week? The secret is they’re wearing wigs!

And when it comes to the latest hair trend wigs are big news and just like make-up, you can transform your look to match your wardrobe simply by slipping one on. Perfect for the party season!

How to choose the right wig

Today’s synthetic wigs look natural and are very affordable but they can get tatty and cannot be styled with heating irons or curlers.

Human hair is more expensive but it will maintain its quality longer and can be styled with heating irons without any damage.

Putting it on

When putting on a wig first comb your hair back flat or cornrow it neatly. Cover with a wig cap as this keeps your own hair in place and stops the wig slipping.

To identify the front and back of the wig look for the label which goes at the back.

Next, adjust the wig to fit securely by using the adjustable Velcro tabs found inside most varieties.

Maintaining the look

Taking care of your wig will ensure its longevity and keep it looking luscious.

Always gently comb your wig and never over-brush it as it will cause your wig to thin.

When you’re not wearing it, make sure you keep it on a wig stand as this will help to keep its shape.

Make sure you always use the correct products to help keep your wig looking sleek – synthetic hair should never be washed with normal shampoos for real hair. Only wash with products made for synthetic fibres.

Always remember to wash your wig in lukewarm water – never hot – and you can dry it by dabbing with a towel to prevent any hairs falling out.

And don’t style your wig when it’s wet as this will ruin it.

The Afro

This was big in the 70s and now the era of flares, folk and disco is back. Swapping her super-long mane for an Afro, supermodel Naomi Campbell has got this trend nailed.

If you’re planning on partying over the festive season an Afro is a great way of bringing some funk to your wardrobe and suits most face shapes.

The bob

The Swinging Sixties trend is in full swing and Nicki Minaj rocked a short blunt 60s’ bob at the MTV Europe Music Awards last month.

When deciding whether to have a bob think of your face shape as this will determine which length and cut of bob is the best one to flatter you.

Nicki’s short cut is great for a square-shaped face. For a round face shape go for a length that sweeps along the chin as this cut will create a stronger jawline.

If you have a heart-shaped face go for a soft bob that sits just above the shoulders to soften the face. A long textured bob with a fringe is best suited to an oval-shaped face.
