Today you’ll be learning how to dye your lace front wig without staining the lace.
This method is ideal if you want to add darker roots to a light wig or you simply want to avoid having to take extra steps to remove the dye stains or any unwanted tint that has bled onto the lace.
What You Will Need:
Vaseline
Mannequin head with a plastic bag or cover to protect it
Dye color (the thicker the better)
An old toothbrush
Mixing bowl
Shampooing basin
Shampoo
Conditioner
Towel
This method should take 30 – 45 minutes.
Step 1
Cover your mannequin head with a plastic cover to protect it.
Flip your lace wig inside out and place it on the mannequin.
Apply the Vaseline onto the lace. Smooth it over the lace using your fingers. No need to press it in.
The Vaseline acts as the barrier between the hair and the lace and prohibits the dye from bleeding through and staining the lace.
Step 2
Remove the wig from the mannequin head and flip it the right way up.
Place it back onto the mannequin head and prepare to apply the dye color according to the instructions on the box. A thicker dye is recommended to stop the color from running everywhere.
Pour the color into the mixing bowl.
Step 3
It’s best to use an old toothbrush to apply the dye. The toothbrush will allow you to color the roots right up to the lace without bleeding through to the opposite side of the lace.
Step 4
Divide the hair into small sections, working one section at a time.
Dip the toothbrush into the dye and brush it onto the hair, making sure to color each strand with the brush in that section.
To guarantee that the dye will get right up to the lace without getting on the lace, turn the toothbrush straight up and brush from the root going down.
Notice that the lace is still untouched.
Remove the lace frontal from the mannequin head to shampoo it after the dye sets.
Step 5
Some people have experienced difficulty removing the Vaseline from the lace frontal even after shampooing. It’s usually because of the use of cold water, which leaves the hair greasy as a result.
Below are some shampooing tips that have been proven to work well and remove the Vaseline from the lace and hair.
First rinse the dye out with clean water only, follow the water temperature guide found on the instructions given in the dye box.
Mix warm to hot water and the shampoo in a large enough shampooing basin.
Let the lace sit in the water until the Vaseline comes off and shampoo as normal. Repeat this step if necessary.
Condition the hair in the same way.

This method may seem tedious but it should only take 30- 45 minutes to complete. It is worth it considering you will avoid any extra work involved in removing dye stains from the lace if you didn’t have a barrier working for you like the Vaseline does.
