What is a lace wig and how does it work?
A lace wig, or a lace front wig is a type of hair piece that has each piece of hair tied by hand to a sheer lace cap that you wear on your head. The top and edges appear as natural as possible by mimicking the look of hair growing from your scalp. The lace will typically come with plenty of excess, so you’ll have more than enough to fit your head and hairline perfectly. You’ll trim it during your sizing and before you glue or secure the wig to your scalp.
Once the wig is affixed with an adhesive, you’ll likely be able to wear it for a few weeks before it needs to come out. You can touch it up with a bit of additional glue, but you’ll be able to sleep in it, and style it again the next day. With the adhesive, you’ll even be able to swim or shower. Although both of those do make the bond of the original adhesive break down some, of course. With a glueless lace wig, you’ll need to secure it into your hair. Unless you have the wig made to match your specific measurements, you’ll probably need to an adjustable strap in the back to fit your head perfectly. The other alternative for glueless is an elastic band or sewn in.

How do you apply a lace wig?
Wig glue is the most common way to apply your lace wig. You’ll probably want to watch a tutorial for a few finer points on what to do to make it look the most realistic, but the basics are relatively, well, basic. Fix your natural hair to your head as flat as possible. You can use a thin cap for this if you’d like. Then spread glue around your hairline. Place your wig and trim the lace so that no excess is shown. You’ll want to pull a few strands of the “new growth” out from the edges of the lace wig to really sell it as your hair. Because a natural appearance means it’s not going to be perfect. Which means you’re going to want to strategically pull out some imperfections.
Another big factor in deciding the best application of your lace wig is that there are plenty of salons that specialize in application. That means, you can make an appointment and have that wig installed for you. And while this may not be an every-day type of thing, we love the idea that you can do it when you first get your wig and for special occasions. Remember, a professional will likely be able to get your hair applied so thoroughly, you’ll probably be able to wear it for quite a few weeks before it starts to loosen and come off.
The third option is to gluelessly put it on. You’ll either pin it on (by doing this, you’ll be able to take it off nightly) or you can go somewhere and have the wig sewn into your hair. That will last the longest, but getting it out will be the biggest struggle so be sure you’re sewing in a high quality wig that won’t shed after a few days.
How do lace front wigs stay on?
Mostly, lace front wigs stay on with adhesive. You will affix glue to your hairline and scalp and place the lace directly onto the glue, pressing firmly into place. You can use tape, as well. Depending on your choice of adhesive, you could keep your wig on for several days or weeks without needing to readjust it. (Just remember not to forget your real hair, while you have it on. Even if you don’t take the wig off to wash and dry your scalp, make sure you get in good and deep in cleansing the wig so that your head gets cleaned as well. And make sure to dry under there thoroughly, too. You can use a blow dryer or hood dryer, if necessary.)
Alternatively, for a glueless wig, you’ll need to make use of other means of securing. You’ll want to choose a wig that is as close to your head’s circumference as possible but that will only go so far. Primarily, you’ll be using bobby pins, combs and elastic sizers. Glueless will very commonly have a kind of belt in the underside of the back, along the base of your head, often called a “sizer.” They can also use an elastic band along the back that will make adjusting a bit easier. But keep in mind, the elastic will not give you the kind of fit that will hold for any kind of abuse; bumping or scratching will often move the wig and make it obvious that it’s not your natural hair.

A lace wig should have a few important features. Here’s what to consider when selecting a lace wig:
Color, Style and Type
Before picking out a wig, you’ll want to consider your motivation for doing so. If you need a wig to explore crazy options and try something outrageous “on for size” so to speak, you’ll need to worry less about the differences in your natural hair and your wig. This is a great opportunity to experiment and make sure you’re getting the hair that suits you best; even if that type isn’t what you were born with. If you want your wig to be really convincing, though, you may want to stick with a wig that closely resembles your hair. When making convincing transitions, baby steps are key. If you have very curly hair, you may not want to go perfectly straight and bright red at the same time. But keep in mind, your hair is your business. You ultimately need to do what makes you happy with your hair; convincing or not.
Synthetic vs. human
The truth is, that no matter how high quality the wig, a synthetic wig won’t behave the same as a wig made of human hair. If you plan on using the hair frequently and doing all sorts of different styles, cuts, and colors with it, you’ll want a wig of human hair. But if you’re looking for a wig that you’ll be happy with from the start (a “move-in ready” type wig), then a high quality synthetic wig will work just fine and can theoretically save you a fortune. And you can try a lot more wigs out if they each cost less. This may be the route you choose when you’re still searching for a style that suits you. Then when you decide which you like best, you can spring for the higher quality wig.
Virgin hair
“Virgin” hair refers to hair that is untouched. It means that hair that’s never been treated with any chemicals like color or perms. That means the hair will be softer and shinier; because it’s healthier. It will also all be from a single donor, while wigs that’s don’t specifically list that, could be hair that is collected from several donors. In fact, there’s even a possibility the hair you have will have been collected from the floor of a salon. With virgin hair, the cuticles will all be facing the same direction, making it less likely to knot and mat. With non-virgin hair, the cuticles will face different directions and in order to create the illusion of virgin hair, the manufacturer will often need to coat the hair in silicone to make it smoother. Doing this will make it difficult for you to color and sometimes even to style.
Glueless
You’ll need to use a glueless wig if you have an allergy to adhesives (or you just hate them). If you use a wig with glue, you can get a “one size fits all” type of wig because they have a bit of give in the crown. But if you plan on a snug fit, you can’t have that. A glueless wig will need to be 100% hand tied because they’re not going to be able to have a lot of give. They’ll have to be fitted to you perfectly. Some wig makers will ask for specific measurements of your head, but in most cases, you can choose a circumference size that fits you closest and utilize the adjustable strap and combs to get a snug fit.
Full lace
If you want the full “convincing” experience, you’ll want to be able to pull your hair up into a high ponytail and that means lace in the back, too. In fact, it means lace all-around. And that’s only if you just want the “down or up” options. If you want full versatility to do absolutely anything you want with your wig, just as you would your hair, that means lace everywhere. You can’t pull your hair into a half ponytail or braids if you’re wig is only realistic along the edges.
Density
This refers to how thick the hair is. The average human’s natural hair is about a 100%-120% density. If the density of your wig isn’t listed, it’s probably 120%, as that is the wig standard and it is a medium thickness. Obviously the thicker the hair the more you’ll be able to shed without noticing and if you plan on working a lot with your hair, then you may benefit from a little bit of a shed buffer. Remember, while your hair keeps growing, the wig won’t. So starting a little thicker will probably benefit you in the long run.
Pre-plucked hairline
This will be what gives you a “natural” appearance. A lot of lace wigs will be pre-plucked because the entire point of a lace wig is a natural appearance. If you get a lace wig that does not have the hairline pre-plucked, you’ll want to do that on your own. And while that can be a bit of a pain, it’s certainly doable. You may be able to save a few bucks without the pre-plucked, but you will need to consider how much money your time is worth.
Longevity
You may not have considered this, but wigs don’t last forever. While they don’t necessarily have an expiration date, they do start to break down and shed over time. How much time depends on the quality of the wig, how often you use it, and how well you care for it. There will always be exceptions and ways to extend the life, but as a general rule.
